Indications for Inpatient Admission
Inpatient psychiatric admission is clinically indicated when a person's mental health condition requires structured, 24-hour oversight and intervention that cannot be managed safely in an outpatient or home environment. Admission decisions are made by a registered clinician based on clinical assessment.
This list is not exhaustive. Admission appropriateness is determined solely by clinical assessment.
Inpatient vs Outpatient Care
Goldfields Healthcare provides inpatient psychiatric care only. The facility does not offer outpatient clinics, day programmes, or independent assessment services.
Inpatient admission is appropriate when the level of clinical need exceeds what can be managed in a community or outpatient setting. Patients admitted to Goldfields Healthcare receive continuous 24-hour nursing care and multidisciplinary clinical oversight throughout their stay.
Where outpatient or community-based care is more appropriate, the referring practitioner should facilitate access to those services. Our admissions team can assist with clinical guidance on appropriateness where needed.
For Families and Caregivers
If you are concerned about a family member's mental health, the most appropriate first step is to consult a registered general practitioner. The GP can conduct an initial assessment and, where clinically indicated, initiate a referral to an appropriate inpatient facility such as Goldfields Healthcare.
In cases where a person poses an immediate risk to themselves or others, contact emergency services (10177 or 112) or call our after-hours psychiatric line.
Psychiatric Emergency
If a person is in immediate danger, is experiencing active psychosis, or is expressing intent to harm themselves or others, this constitutes a psychiatric emergency.
- Call emergency services: 10177 (ambulance) or 112 (any network)
- Call our after-hours psychiatry line: 057 065 0819
- Do not leave the person alone if there is a risk of self-harm
When in doubt, treat it as an emergency.
