Goldfields Healthcare

Our Approach

Goldfields Healthcare Hospital provides Sub-Acute and inpatient psychiatric care within a structured therapeutic environment focused on stabilization and recovery.

Admission requires a referral from a GP or specialist. Goldfields Healthcare does not accept walk-in or self-referred patients.

About Our Care Model

Goldfields Healthcare Hospital is sub acute and inpatient psychiatric facility based in Welkom, Free State. We provide sub acute treatment and specialized psychiatric care for adults who require structured, 24-hour clinical support during a period of health crisis or instability.

All care at Goldfields Healthcare is provided on an inpatient basis. We do not offer outpatient services, walk-in consultations, or independent assessments.

Soft Psychiatry Model

Goldfields Healthcare operates within a soft psychiatry model — an approach that prioritises patient stabilisation, therapeutic engagement, and a supportive recovery environment over heavily medicalised or restrictive intervention.

This model recognises that mental health recovery is most effective when patients feel safe, respected, and actively engaged in their own care. Our clinical team works collaboratively with patients to develop individualised treatment goals within a structured daily programme.

  • Focus on stabilisation and safe clinical management
  • Therapeutic and recovery-oriented environment
  • Patient dignity and autonomy at the centre of all decisions
  • Evidence-based practices aligned with current psychiatric standards

Multidisciplinary Care Team

Patient care at Goldfields Healthcare is provided by a multidisciplinary team (MDT) that brings together professionals from multiple disciplines to deliver comprehensive, coordinated inpatient care.

Psychiatrists

Oversee admission, diagnose, manage medication, and provide clinical leadership throughout the patient's stay.

Psychologists

Provide therapeutic support as part of the inpatient programme. Consultations occur when clinically indicated during admission.

Nursing Staff

24-hour nursing care by registered and enrolled nurses trained in psychiatric and mental health nursing.

Allied Health Professionals

Occupational therapists, social workers, and other allied professionals contribute to the patient's holistic recovery.

Structured Inpatient Programme

Patients participate in a structured inpatient programme incorporating therapeutic engagement, clinical oversight, and coordinated care within a monitored environment. Individual clinical input is provided by the treating team when clinically indicated and is not arranged on request by patients or families.

Sub-Acute Medical Care

In addition to psychiatric care, Goldfields Healthcare provides sub-acute medical care for patients who require step-down or recovery support following acute hospital treatment. This is managed within a dedicated inpatient environment with access to allied health services.

Sub-acute care includes, but is not limited to:

  • Post-operative recovery and wound care
  • Recovery from illness or injury not requiring acute hospital admission
  • Palliative care
  • Internal medicine management in a sub-acute setting
  • Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy as required

Sub-acute medical admissions are arranged through a referring hospital, GP, or specialist. Countrywide referrals are accepted.

Admission Requires a Referral

All admissions to Goldfields Healthcare must be arranged through a GP or specialist. Referrals from practitioners across South Africa are welcome. Our admissions team will assist with pre-authorisation and guide you through the process.
